Seasonal Stewardship/Outreach Technician Job Description
Position Title: Stewardship/Outreach Technician
Location: Lafayette, IN (preserves located within 1 hr. in west-central IN)
Job Classification: Seasonal Full-time (40 hours/week), 12 weeks
Proposed Term: May 13 – August 5, 2025
Pay: $15-18 per hour
Reports To: NICHES Stewardship Managers
Applications Due: March 1, 2025*
Job Purpose: The Stewardship/Outreach Technician is a seasonal position that will work in coordination with NICHES’ stewardship and outreach staff to implement NICHES’ mission of protecting, restoring, and sustaining Northern Indiana ecosystems. The Stewardship/Outreach Technician’s primary duty is to carry out quality stewardship practices on NICHES properties distributed widely over a 13-county service area. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Non-native, invasive species control and other vegetation management projects utilizing chemical and mechanical methods
- Trail maintenance
- Maintain written records of the tasks and work
- Help facilitate volunteer stewardship workdays and outreach events
- Assist in the implementation of NICHES’ Summer Nature Camp program
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS:
- Ability to work outdoors in inclement conditions for up to 8 hours a day, performing demanding physical labor, including lifting objects up to 60 pounds
- Excellent written and communication skills
- Possess current motor vehicle license and good driving record
- Good sense of direction
- Applicants must provide their own proper footwear for field work
- Demonstrated understanding of the principles of ecological restoration
- Familiarity with the safe operation and basic maintenance of a variety of vehicles and power tools, including light duty trucks, trailers, tractors, chainsaws, and brush cutters
- Experience with the safe use and application of herbicides
- Experience with supervising volunteers on a given task and supervising children
