Property Closures for Annual Deer Cull Starting November 1

Each November, NICHES Land Trust closes some of our properties in order to strategically manage white-tailed deer populations in the ecosystems that we protect.

NICHES works with volunteer hunting crews to carefully manage deer populations on its properties. These hunters, who are volunteers and neighbors of the land we protect, play an instrumental role in our mission of protecting and preserving our local ecosystems. In addition to hunting, these volunteers help NICHES with other stewardship tasks. Last year, these volunteers contributed over 1,700 hours, providing almost $54,000 of in-kind support for NICHES!

Earlier this year, Geswein Farm & Land interviewed NICHES Stewardship Staff about the program, and you can read that article here.

According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, deer overpopulation is still an issue for our region. "In many cases, management actions are necessary to mitigate damage and prevent future damage from occurring." Because humans have eliminated their natural predators, the overpopulation of deer has drastic effects on native plant communities. Click here to read more from the DNR >>
