Burn season

NICHES Spring Burn Season Concludes

From February 26 and March 23, NICHES conducted 7 prescribed fires across 300+ acres. Properties burned included Fall Creek Gorge, the Farris Estate, Black Rock Barrens, Potawatomi Trail, Holley Savanna, Warren Piece, and Fisher Oak Savanna. Carefully planned burns like these play a crucial role in restoring and maintaining native ecosystems. Fire helps control invasive species, enriches soil nutrients, and promotes the growth of native plants that wildlife depend on. Indigenous peoples also historically used fire as a land management tool, shaping and sustaining these ecosystems long before modern conservation practices. Thank you to our staff and volunteers for making all of our burns this season safe and effective!
