Mindfulness Hike: Rest
As we enter the thick of the cold winter months, we encourage you to prioritize your personal wellbeing and mental health. This past Saturday, our quarterly Mindfulness Hike emphasized the importance of rest, reflected on our connection to the natural world, and explored restful poetry.
In honor of the hike’s message, we’ve compiled three global mindfulness terms related to rest for you to practice on your own or with company.
“Merak” (meh-rak)–Serbia: the feeling of pleasure that comes from enjoying the simple things in life.
Whether it’s taking a breath of fresh winter air, watching the sun sparkle in the snow, or taking a stroll through a still forest, we invite you to slow down and appreciate the simple joys in life at our recreational locations.
“Waldeinsamkeit” (vild-ein-zam-kite)–Germany: solitude in the forest.
This term describes the feeling of peace and comfort that comes from being surrounded by nature. It is intended for those who yearn for the solitude of the open woods and an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Most people who practice this do so alone.
“Shinrin-yoku” (shin-reen-yoh-coo)–Japan: forest bathing.
Forest bathing is the Japanese practice of immersing oneself in nature and connecting with surrounding life. This practice is meditative and considered therapeutic. Take in the sights, sounds, smells, and feeling of the tranquil forest. It can be done alone or with others, and encourages you to unplug, observe, and be present.
If you weren’t able to register for this Saturday’s hike, fear not! We are planning another Mindfulness Hike on April 26 where we will be admiring the Bluebells at Williams Woods. The theme for this hike is “renewal” – further details and registration will be released soon. Regardless, you are welcome to practice any of these mindfulness terms on your own in a NICHES property near you.
