DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday November 1st (11am meetup at the Wright Center in Martell Forest). Participants will drive together from Martell over to NICHES Beineke Preserve to conduct a stream health survey of Indian Creek. \NJoin us for an engaging and hands-on program focused on understanding stream health and biodiversity. In this immersive experience, participants will explore freshwater ecosystems through the following activities: \N\NElectrofishing Demonstration: Learn about electrofishing techniques used by researchers to sample fish populations. Discover how electric currents temporarily stun fish, allowing for safe collection and assessment. \N\NStream Fish Collection: Roll up your sleeves and wade into the stream! Participants will practice fish collection methods, identifying various species and discussing their ecological roles. \N\NMacroinvertebrate Sampling: Explore the fascinating world of stream macroinvertebrates. We’ll demonstrate simple sampling techniques, highlighting the importance of these small organisms as bioindicators of water quality. \N\NSpecies Diversity and Stream Health Discussion: Engage in lively discussions about the significance of species diversity in maintaining healthy stream ecosystems. Understand how changes in land use, pollution, and habitat loss impact stream health. \N\NBy the end of this program, you’ll gain valuable insights into stream ecosystems, their inhabitants, and the critical role they play in maintaining our planet’s water quality. Please call Sam Cody at 513-490-5080 if you are running late for this event.
