Need a break from Christmas and a reason to get outside and help the natural world?
This hike follows the Whistler Woods Oak Savanna Restoration workday, taking place from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
The hike will be an amble down to the shale bluffs along the creek.
Everyone is welcome to do the hike, or the workday, or both.

From downtown Delphi, Indiana: Head east on Indiana 25, turn north on 300 North, look for sign for trail head marking Delphi Trail System. Park at the lot, and head east over the Freedom Bridge. NICHES property is on the south after crossing the Freedom Bridge.
9:00 p.m. hike to the bluffs over Shawnee Creek (sunset at 9:20 PM and twilight ends 9:53 PM), while enjoying an evening dance of fire flies in the beauty of nature. Return hike will be in the dark and flashlights are recommended.

Travel west from US 41 on Covered Bridge Road into Rob Roy. Enjoy the historic covered bridge and slow speed and wind your way for 2 miles. Turn north at the driveway, and take the gravel lane for 0.4 miles to NICHES property boundary and park.
The NICHES owned portion is shown in red, and the white line is the 0.4 mile gravel lane that leads back to the property. The lane passes three homes.

From Lafayette/West Lafayette take South River Road, west across US 231for about 6.5 miles until you reach the sign for West Point at 700 W. From Lafayette/West Lafayette take South River Road/Division Road west across US 231 and follow that for 8.3 miles to the Ravines Golf Course at S 875 W and take a left. Follow S 875 W passed Ross Hills Park and curve right onto W 50 S. Take the next left onto 925 W and follow that past Ross Camp and curve right onto W 75 S. Take the next left onto S 950 W and follow that for 3 miles. As you approach the property you will ascend a steep hill where you will begin to see the exposed sandstone bedrock which gives the property its name. The parking lot is at the top of the hill to your left.
From Attica/Williamsport turn onto SR 55 from SR 28/41 and cross the bridge over Big Pine Creek. Take the first right onto E Independence Road. Follow Independence Road for 9.7 miles until you reach E 350 N and turn right. The parking lot will be on your right in 0.6 miles. The parking lot for Black Rock is marked with a blue pin.

Spring peepers, chorus frogs, leopard frogs, and American toads are just some of the amphibian species that signal the end of winter. Join Purdue Professor Jason Hoverman for a nighttime activity exploring these amazing amphibian species as they begin their breeding season at Mulvey Pond. We recommend you bring headlamps/flashlights and mud boots/waders.

This gentle hike will feature some uneven terrain and sloping hills. Please wear long pants and sturdy shoes, and bring your own water. There are no restrooms are located at the property.
If you would like to hitch a ride with the carpool, the NICHES Van will depart from the parking lot of Clegg Memorial Garden in Lafayette at 1:15 pm.
Our friends at Warren Prairie Sanctuary invite the community to attend an on-site Open House on June 6, 2026, from 2 to 4 PM. Participants will gather at the Crows Grove Nature Preserve parking lot at 2 PM before proceeding to the Circle of Pines for an introductory gathering, including refreshments and an overview of conservation burial practices.
The program will include guided tours of the cemeprairie and surrounding prairie and woodland habitats, as well as a presentation featuring a reenactment of a conservation burial. The event will conclude at the Circle of Pines with time for additional questions and discussion. No registration neccisary, please email questions to wpsanctuary@warrenprairiesanctuary.org.
