NICHES Land Trust sites in the middle Wabash River region were surveyed for the presence of plains leopard frog, a state endangered species, in the summer of 2020. Two sites, Roy Whistler Wildlife Area and Shawnee Bottoms, were found to be home to these rare frogs, and males were detected calling near Pecan Basin, and likely using the site.
All three sites had the majority of the floodplain in agricultural production when NICHES acquired, and are in the process of reforesting. So gratifying to see once again that restoration works.
As part of the DNR’s work, additional frog species encountered were recorded. See the attached report of what they found during their field season.
